Bitcoin retreats below $66,000 as $85 oil triggers risk-off shift

Bitcoin fell from a one-month high as surging crude prices revived inflation fears, prompting a flight to safety that pushed the token's market dominance to 59%.

Bitcoin dropped below $66,000 on Wednesday, pulling back from its highest level in over a month as escalating geopolitical tensions drove oil prices higher. The largest cryptocurrency slipped 0.9% to $65,900, while ether shed 0.5% to trade at $1,920.

The catalyst was a surge in WTI crude above $85 a barrel for the first time since June 12, sparked by an escalating conflict involving Iran. This revival of inflation concerns rippled across traditional markets, dragging down S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures while boosting gold and silver. Within the crypto sector, the uncertainty triggered a clear rotation into perceived safety, with bitcoin's dominance climbing to 59% as capital fled altcoins and stablecoins.

Derivatives markets reflect this evaporating bullish conviction. Overall trading volume dropped 12% to $150 billion over 24 hours, with total open interest static at $116 billion and liquidations a muted $165 million. The 24-hour long/short ratio tightened to an almost even 50.59/49.41, indicating yesterday's bullish bias has faded. Meanwhile, traders are pricing in turbulence, pushing bitcoin's 30-day implied volatility up to 40% from 37.5%.

Bearish momentum is heavily concentrated in specific altcoins. Hyperliquid's HYPE token dropped 3.4% to $58.79 as futures open interest hit 42.8 million tokens, its highest level since early June, accompanied by negative funding rates that signal aggressive short positioning. Stellar (XLM) saw a similar three-day buildup in bearish open interest as sellers kept the token below 19 cents.

Despite the spot market weakness, options traders are retaining some upside bias. Bitcoin calls continue to dominate Deribit volume, with heavy activity concentrated at the $70,000 and $72,000 strikes. Ether options traders are similarly targeting the $3,000 level.

A few pockets of the market defied the broader malaise. Tokenized real-world assets attracted speculative capital, with Ondo rising 26% over the past week to $0.40, while ether.fi and Ethena also posted gains. The Midnight network was the session's standout, surging 19% after Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson publicly praised it as an "incredible ecosystem" with "wonderful technology."
