India's rupee rallies to 96.24 as RBI intervention, lower oil demand lift currency

The Indian rupee strengthened 21 paise to 96.24 against the dollar, driven by reduced oil demand and central bank intervention that underscored its capacity to manage volatility.

The Indian rupee strengthened 21 paise to close at 96.24 against the US dollar on Tuesday, rebounding from its previous session's finish of 96.45. The recovery was primarily driven by a temporary pause in dollar demand from oil companies and sustained foreign capital inflows.

India's central bank actively managed the currency's trajectory throughout the session. State-run banks, widely understood to be acting on behalf of the Reserve Bank of India, sold dollars during the first half of the trading day to anchor the currency around the 96.42 level.

This onshore intervention followed earlier dollar sales by the RBI in the offshore market. Those pre-market moves pulled the rupee away from its early lows near 96.55 and dictated a stronger opening at 96.41.

"The recovery today was because oil companies weren't buying dollars and foreign currency inflow continued to support sentiments. State run banks, likely on behalf of the central bank, sold dollars in the first half of the day, as support was lent around 96.42 levels," said Anil Bhansali, head of treasury at Finrex Treasury Advisors. This combination of factors shifted the market dynamics firmly in favor of the local unit.

The intraday trading band was confined to a tight range of 96.12 to 96.42. The absence of dollar purchases by oil importers provided critical relief for the local unit, as India relies heavily on imported energy to fuel its economy.

When state refiners delay their dollar purchases, the structural demand for the US currency eases significantly. This allows the rupee to appreciate without requiring exhaustive central bank reserves.

For market participants, the session highlighted the RBI's continued willingness to smooth out volatility and prevent abrupt depreciation. The dual approach of intervening in both offshore and onshore markets signals a deliberate strategy to manage the exchange rate.

Foreign investors monitoring Indian assets will note that the central bank retains sufficient firepower to dictate short-term trading ranges. This curbs speculative positioning and provides a degree of predictability for executives managing foreign exchange risk.
