London Stock Exchange to launch overnight trading venue for ETPs in 2027

The London Stock Exchange will launch a dedicated overnight trading venue for exchange-traded products in 2027, marking a strategic push to capture liquidity and compete with continuous crypto platforms amid a broader struggle to attract new listings.

The London Stock Exchange is preparing to launch a nonstop trading venue, LSE 24, which will operate from 5 pm to 7:50 am London time. The platform is expected to be ready for client testing by the end of 2026. Exchange-traded products will become the first tradable assets on the system in the first half of 2027.

This new offering will run separately from the bourse’s main market, which will maintain its standard operating hours. LSE Chief Executive Julia Hoggett stated that the initiative will provide clients with "greater flexibility beyond traditional trading hours". She noted that the move is designed to deliver enhanced liquidity and broader market participation.

The exchange indicated that the platform retains the flexibility to expand into equities as a subsequent phase. This strategic shift arrives as younger investors increasingly gravitate toward the continuous, round-the-clock trading models offered by cryptocurrency firms such as Coinbase Global.

For market participants, the overnight window offers a mechanism to react to global macroeconomic events as they unfold in Asian and American time zones. By isolating this activity to exchange-traded products initially, the LSE can test infrastructure resilience before committing to continuous equity trading. This phased rollout allows the exchange to build overnight liquidity organically without disrupting its primary daytime operations.

The initiative represents a critical adaptation for the 300-year-old institution during a turbulent period for its core business. Attracting initial public offerings has become a primary focus after the venue struggled to attract new listings in recent years. The introduction of LSE 24 signals a proactive effort to modernize its product suite and retain relevance in a shifting global market.

During the first nine months of 2025, the exchange fell out of the top 20 global venues for new listings. However, a late flurry of activity has since prompted market optimism regarding a long-awaited recovery throughout 2026.
