Amazon appoints first finance VP for Leo satellite business

Amazon has appointed a dedicated finance chief for its Leo satellite unit, signaling the multibillion-dollar venture is being structured as an independent business ahead of a major capital buildout.

Amazon named Mike Recupero as the first vice president of finance for Leo earlier this month, marking a structural shift for the satellite business. The newly created role pulls the unit's financial oversight away from the Alexa division, where it was previously managed alongside more junior staff.

The appointment signals that Amazon is building Leo, formerly known as Project Kuiper, into a more independent entity outside its core retail and cloud operations. Recupero brings extensive internal experience, having previously served as finance chief for Prime Video and North America retail, alongside a year-long stint as GameStop's CFO.

In his new post, Recupero will manage the finances of a multibillion-dollar infrastructure buildout. His portfolio will include satellite manufacturing, launch operations, and the integration of Globalstar, the satellite communications firm Amazon is acquiring for $11.6 billion.

Wall Street is increasingly treating Leo as a distinct growth driver. Bank of America recently projected the unit could generate $20 billion to $25 billion in annual revenue by 2032, giving it a potential valuation of $200 billion to $275 billion. CEO Andy Jassy has noted that the business holds revenue commitments from enterprise and government customers, adding it is expected to generate meaningful growth and returns.

The operational footprint is expanding rapidly. Leo has completed 14 missions and deployed 396 satellites, making it the third-largest constellation in orbit. However, the buildout carries significant technical risks, highlighted by the ground-test explosion of a Blue Origin rocket slated for future Leo missions in June. Leo VP Rajeev Badyal moved to reassure employees after the incident, noting such setbacks are an expected part of spaceflight.

Recupero's arrival completes a broader executive assembly for the unit. Over the past two years, Leo has hired former GitLab chief revenue officer Chris Weber and former T-Mobile executive Clint Patterson to lead sales and marketing. Badyal leads the overall business and reports to Panos Panay, senior vice president of devices, Alexa, and Leo. Amit Singh has succeeded Recupero as Alexa's finance lead.
