Galaxy creates $5m fund to shield Bitcoin from quantum threats

Galaxy Digital has established a $5 million fund to develop quantum-resistant defenses for Bitcoin, aiming to secure roughly $461 billion of the cryptocurrency before future technological advances render current encryption obsolete.

Galaxy Digital has launched a $5 million fund to pay developers to protect the Bitcoin network from future quantum computing attacks. The crypto financial services firm is now accepting applications for its Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative. Grants will focus specifically on building quantum-resistant signature schemes, developing wallet migration tools, and conducting security audits.

The initiative targets a systemic risk that could eventually put a massive chunk of the digital asset market in jeopardy. Researchers estimate that roughly 6.9 million bitcoin, currently worth about $461 billion, could become vulnerable if quantum technology advances to the point of breaking Bitcoin's foundational cryptography. Bitcoin currently secures wallets and transactions using cryptographic techniques that standard computers cannot realistically crack.

Quantum computers currently lack the maturity to pose an immediate threat to the blockchain. However, security experts warn that the industry cannot afford to wait until the risk is imminent. Migrating Bitcoin to post-quantum cryptography is expected to take years. The process will be significantly more complex than previous major protocol upgrades, such as the Taproot update.

A successful transition will demand unprecedented coordination across the ecosystem. Developers, wallet providers, crypto exchanges, and retail users will all need to adopt new cryptographic standards simultaneously. To accelerate this timeline, Galaxy is actively seeking additional backing and research contributions from other firms in the sector.

The private sector push aligns with a sudden sense of urgency within the U.S. government. President Donald Trump recently signed two executive orders directing the country to build a large-scale quantum computer while simultaneously defending federal systems against them.

Furthermore, the U.S. Commerce Department has signed letters of intent to award more than $2 billion to nine quantum computing companies. These firms are building machines explicitly designed to break the cryptography that defends Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the underlying infrastructure of the internet, underscoring the need for immediate defensive preparations.
