LSE to launch 24/5 digital trading venue for overnight sessions

LSE to launch 24/5 digital trading venue for overnight sessions

The London Stock Exchange will launch a dedicated 24/5 overnight trading venue to capitalize on global demand for round-the-clock markets and advance its automated, digital market infrastructure.

The London Stock Exchange will launch a dedicated overnight trading venue as traditional bourses race to adapt to software-driven, round-the-clock markets. Named LSE 24, the new platform will operate Monday through Friday from 17:00 to 07:50. It will run independently of the exchange's core Main Market, which retains its standard 08:00 to 16:30 operating hours, featuring a brief 30-minute nightly pause for end-of-day processing.

Client testing for LSE 24 is scheduled to begin by the end of 2026, with exchange-traded products (ETPs) set to be the inaugural asset class in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approval. The exchange subsequently intends to expand the venue into equities, utilizing central limit order book and request-for-quote functionality to support on-demand liquidity. "The launch of LSE 24 marks an important step in the evolution of our markets, providing clients with greater flexibility beyond traditional trading hours," said Julia Hoggett, CEO of LSE plc and head of digital and securities markets at LSEG.

A play on digital infrastructure

While the extended hours serve as the immediate draw, analysts suggest the venue's true significance lies in its underlying technology. TD Cowen analysts Lance Vitanza and Jonnathan Navarrete noted that LSE 24 is heavily tied to LSEG’s forthcoming Digital Securities Depository. This system is being developed to digitize issuance, settlement, and asset servicing across multiple asset classes over time. The introduction of LSE 24 signals that the exchange group is prioritizing the modernization of its market plumbing.

Furthermore, the venue's emphasis on agent-based trading workflows points to a broader industry shift toward automated market access. This software-driven approach compensates for lower human participation during extended, off-peak hours. However, TD Cowen emphasized that LSE 24 does not represent a wholesale rebuild of existing market structures or a transition to blockchain-based infrastructure.

The overnight liquidity challenge

London's initiative mirrors a growing global trend among bourses to capture overnight trading volume, following the New York Stock Exchange's preliminary approval for a 22-hour trading day. Despite this momentum, some Wall Street participants have cautioned that overnight sessions can attract thinly traded volumes and potential market destabilization. By initially launching LSE 24 with ETPs, the exchange is attempting to anchor the new venue in an asset class where London already serves as a leading international hub.
