Avenir LNG launches 20,000-cbm vessel, secures Vitol charter
Avenir LNG has launched a 20,000-cbm bunkering vessel in China, securing a multi-year Vitol charter that locks in revenue as the firm expands its fleet to meet growing demand for alternative marine fuels.
Avenir LNG launched its new 20,000-cubic-meter LNG bunkering vessel, the Avenir Ambition, at the Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering shipyard in China on July 20, 2026. The vessel is the first in a two-ship newbuilding program ordered by the UK-based company in 2024. It is scheduled for delivery before the end of this year.
The newbuild is tied to a multi-year time-charter agreement with Vitol International Shipping. Securing a long-term contract with a major energy trader provides Avenir LNG with immediate revenue visibility for the asset. The second 20,000-cbm vessel is slated for delivery in 2027, though charter details for that ship were not disclosed.
Once both ships are delivered, they will bring Avenir LNG’s active bunkering fleet to seven vessels, up from the current five. The expansion targets the market for cleaner alternative marine fuels, focusing on ship-to-ship and regional LNG supply capabilities. “The launch of Avenir Ambition represents an important step in the continued growth of our fleet and our commitment to strengthening LNG supply chains around the world,” Avenir LNG said.
“As demand for flexible, reliable LNG logistics continues to grow, this vessel will further enhance our ability to support customers and expand our market presence,” the company added. The vessels are specifically designed to bolster regional supply chains and ship-to-ship transfers of cleaner marine fuels.
Michael Redpath, Head of Operations at Avenir LNG, highlighted the operational progress of the new asset. “Today is a proud day for all of us at Avenir LNG as we celebrate the launch of Avenir Ambition. I look forward to seeing Avenir Ambition complete her final outfitting and join our fleet, where she’ll play an important role in supporting customers around the world,” Redpath stated.
The construction involved project management and site teams from Stolt Tankers. Avenir LNG credited the Chinese shipyard and the Stolt team for their expertise and collaboration. “This achievement reflects the combined efforts of all involved, and we look forward to the next stages of construction and to welcoming Avenir Ambition into service,” the company said.
