London Stock Exchange to launch round-the-clock trading platform next year

The London Stock Exchange will introduce a 24-hour trading venue next year, initially focusing on exchange-traded products to capture growing demand from Asian investors and compete with always-on digital assets.

The London Stock Exchange will launch a round-the-clock trading venue next year, marking a structural shift in how traditional equities markets operate. The new platform, designated LSE 24, will function entirely separately from the exchange's established main market.

Trading on this extended-hours venue will run from 5 p.m. to 7:50 a.m. London time. A mandatory 30-minute pause will occur between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. to apply essential end-of-day processes. The main market will continue to operate under its standard 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. schedule.

During its initial phase, LSE 24 will exclusively offer access to exchange-traded products. This offering will feature funds designed to track major UK or U.S. stock markets, providing participants with continuous exposure to benchmark indices outside conventional windows.

This strategic expansion addresses mounting competitive pressure on traditional exchanges from cryptocurrencies and other digital assets. These alternative investments are not restricted by conventional opening hours, raising expectations among retail traders for constant market access.

The new operating hours also cater directly to growing international demand, specifically from Asian member firms. These institutions are seeking reliable avenues to trade securities they already access on the London market during their own local daytime hours.

Julia Hoggett, chief executive of the London Stock Exchange, emphasized this regional driver. "We have a lot of member firms who are in Asia who increasingly have appetite to continue to trade the securities that they have access to on our market," she stated.

While the initial rollout is deliberately limited to exchange-traded products, the exchange anticipates a broader product expansion. Hoggett indicated that other asset classes, including individual equities, could be integrated into the LSE 24 platform in the future.

"We certainly envisage that would be the next step," Hoggett said. She added that market participants could eventually see a version of the world where the new venue trades exactly the same securities as the main market.
