CoinShares debuts Irish-domiciled Bitcoin mining ETF on Xetra

The asset manager's new exchange-traded fund gives European investors a regulated, physically replicated vehicle to access publicly listed cryptocurrency miners.

CoinShares began trading its first UCITS exchange-traded fund in Europe on Tuesday. The Irish-domiciled CoinShares Bitcoin Mining UCITS ETF, which carries the ticker MINE, is now listed on Deutsche Börse Xetra. This launch marks the asset manager's initial entry into the European UCITS market.

The physically replicated fund tracks the CoinShares Bitcoin Mining Index. This rules-based basket of publicly listed Bitcoin mining companies is administered by Solactive AG. According to the asset manager, the ETF carries a total expense ratio of 0.65% and rebalances its holdings on a quarterly basis.

Early trading activity on Xetra was modest on the first day. Data from the exchange showed that 60 units changed hands, generating a turnover of 1,184 euros at a last traded price of 19.50 euros, or $21.74.

This initial volume contrasts with the firm's established US-traded equivalent, the CoinShares Bitcoin Mining ETF. That American fund trades under the ticker WGMI and currently holds $343.6 million in net assets.

The structural choice of a UCITS wrapper is highly significant for the regional market. Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities represent the European Union’s primary regulatory framework for investment funds. By domiciling the product in Ireland and utilizing this framework, CoinShares can market the ETF across multiple European jurisdictions under a single, harmonized regulatory regime.

For European investors, this provides a standardized avenue to gain exposure to the cryptocurrency mining sector. Rather than holding the underlying digital assets directly, investors are buying equity in the companies that secure the Bitcoin network. The physical replication method ensures the fund holds the actual shares of the miners included in the index.

The launch highlights a divergence in how crypto-related equities are packaged for different global audiences. While the US market has already accumulated substantial capital in the WGMI product, the new European vehicle starts from a zero base. However, the UCITS structure is specifically designed to facilitate cross-border distribution, which could accelerate asset gathering as the fund gains traction with wealth managers across the continent.
