Wall Street Downgrades Adobe, Workday on AI Revenue Doubts

Wall Street analysts downgraded a swathe of major software stocks including Adobe and Workday on fears that generative AI is disrupting business models faster than companies can monetize them, while upgrading firms with clearer near-term growth catalysts.

Morgan Stanley downgraded Adobe and Workday to Underweight, slashing their price targets on concerns that the pace of AI-driven revenue growth will be too gradual to justify current valuations. The bank warned that Adobe's freemium, leadership, and reinvestment transitions "compound execution risk" as generative AI clouds its path to annual recurring revenue reacceleration. Morgan Stanley also cut Salesforce, Intuit, Elastic, and JFrog to Equal Weight.

This broad negative shift across enterprise software signals growing institutional skepticism regarding the timeline for AI monetization. While these companies possess dominant market positions, analysts see an uncertain margin outlook and limited near-term catalysts. The downgrades suggest investors are actively repricing the premium attached to software vendors until concrete AI revenue materializes.

The risk of AI-driven disruption extended beyond internal execution. Jefferies downgraded Datadog to Hold, arguing that its thesis as an AI beneficiary has largely played out in the first half of 2026. Shopify dropped to Neutral at Rothschild & Co Redburn, which cut its price target to $130 from $160. The firm cited rising competition from Meta Platforms, noting the social media giant's pivot to small business AI tools is "resulting in a longer growth runway, wider moat, and higher margins and returns."

Outside of software, Live Nation was downgraded to Neutral by Susquehanna. The firm sees "little room for error" in the upcoming earnings report following a 27% year-to-date share rally.

The contrast in analyst sentiment was evident in the upgrade cycle, where firms benefiting from physical AI infrastructure buildouts were favored. Morgan Stanley upgraded Fortinet to Equal Weight, raising its price target to $133 from $80. The bank acknowledged its previous sell thesis failed to account for the strength of the hardware cycle driven by AI preparedness investment.

Traditional retail and financials also saw selective optimism based on fundamental improvements. Raymond James upgraded Ralph Lauren to Outperform with a $410 price target, citing "very positive" channel checks showing accelerating website and mobile traffic. Bernstein upgraded Five Below to Outperform, pointing to a $250 price target and sustainable mid-single-digit comparable sales.

In financial services, HSBC upgraded Goldman Sachs to Hold, lifting its target to $995 from $834 on a better earnings outlook. Jefferies upgraded AdaptHealth to Buy with a $13 target after its diabetes divestiture. The firm views the stock as "now positively biased" due to incremental growth from capitation agreements with managed care organizations.
