DigitalOcean Wins Alger Fund Favor on Agentic AI Outlook
Fred Alger Management flagged DigitalOcean as a key beneficiary of the shift toward agentic AI workloads, citing the cloud provider's upward revenue revisions and strong fundamentals despite a sharp recent pullback.
Fred Alger Management used its second-quarter 2026 investor letter to highlight DigitalOcean Holdings as a primary beneficiary of the evolving artificial intelligence landscape. The asset manager noted that the cloud infrastructure company contributed positively to its Weatherbie Specialized Growth Fund during a quarter defined by a broad market recovery.
That rally saw the S&P 500 gain 15.2%, marking the index's best quarter since 2020. Market optimism was fueled by a US-Iran ceasefire and accelerated capital deployment into AI technologies.
While Information Technology and Industrials led the gains, Energy and Utilities lagged as falling oil and gas prices weighed on the sectors. The Federal Reserve maintained steady interest rates in June with a hawkish tone, but this did little to derail the broader market momentum.
Against this backdrop, the Alger Weatherbie Specialized Growth Fund's Class A shares outperformed the Russell 2500 Growth Index. Overweight positions in IT and Industrials drove this relative outperformance, offsetting headwinds from the fund's allocations to the Financials and Consumer Discretionary sectors.
DigitalOcean closed at $119.09 on July 20, reflecting a $13.92 billion market capitalization. The stock has experienced a sharp 24.23% pullback over the past month. However, it remains up 313.79% over the past 52 weeks, reflecting a year of massive valuation expansion.
The fund explained that DigitalOcean is differentiating itself through a simplified, developer-friendly platform. Rather than competing directly with hyperscalers for massive training contracts, the company is positioning its infrastructure specifically for inference and agentic AI workloads.
"DigitalOcean is benefiting from the early stages of this demand cycle, as customers look for cloud infrastructure that is easier to use and better aligned with emerging AI applications," the investor letter stated. During the second quarter, the company delivered strong operating results, reported accelerating momentum in AI-related customer demand, and raised its revenue outlook for both 2026 and 2027.
For investors tracking the AI sector, DigitalOcean's trajectory highlights a critical market inflection point. As the technology shifts from the training phase toward practical, scalable inference, capital is increasingly flowing to specialized cloud providers that can efficiently serve digital native enterprises and startups.
