Galaxy Funds $5M Bitcoin Quantum Defense as 2030 Risk Looms
Galaxy Digital is committing up to $5 million to fund post-quantum cryptographic defenses for Bitcoin, a proactive move to protect roughly 7 million vulnerable coins from a potential systemic breach expected within the next decade.
Galaxy Digital launched a Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative on Tuesday, pledging up to $5 million in developer grants to build post-quantum defenses. The Nasdaq-listed firm is also establishing a research program and a Quantum Advisory Council featuring academics from MIT, Boston University, and the University of Calgary. Grant applications are open immediately.
The initiative aims to preempt "Q-Day," the theoretical point when a quantum machine can break Bitcoin's elliptic curve cryptography using Shor's algorithm. Such an attacker could derive private keys from public keys to forge signatures and drain wallets without triggering on-chain fraud alerts. Old and reused addresses face the highest exposure.
The financial stakes are substantial. Research from quantum security firm Project Eleven estimates roughly 6.9 million Bitcoin sit in quantum-exposed addresses, a figure roughly aligned with a June warning from a Coinbase advisory council that pegged the vulnerable supply at about 7 million coins.
Project Eleven projects a cryptographically relevant quantum computer is likely to exist by 2033 and could arrive as early as 2030. The warning is resonating at the highest levels of government. President Donald Trump signed executive orders in June advancing U.S. quantum capabilities and moving the federal deadline for post-quantum cryptography to December 2031.
Defending the network involves migrating funds to quantum-resistant addresses and adopting new signature schemes like BIP-360 and BIP-361. However, Bitcoin's decentralized governance makes these upgrades inherently slow. To assist users post-breach, Project Eleven unveiled a technique on July 16 allowing owners to prove wallet control via a parent key rather than a compromised signature. "This gives them a fallback: prove ownership through derivation, not signature, even after that window closes," CEO Alex Pruden wrote.
Galaxy's intervention highlights a growing awareness among institutional crypto players that the industry must act before the threat materializes. "There's a gap between the quantum computing world, which is moving fast, and the Bitcoin development world, which is just beginning to engage with post-quantum cryptography in earnest," said Alex Thorn, head of Galaxy Research. "Galaxy's role is to bridge that gap through research that makes the threat legible to investors and policymakers, as well as grants that fund the developers doing the hardest technical work."
"As leaders in the digital assets space, we believe it's important that we help be part of the solution to any potential threat quantum computing poses to Bitcoin," added founder and CEO Mike Novogratz. For investors, the firm's funding signals that quantum risk is transitioning from a theoretical debate into a concrete, timeline-bound planning issue.
