Coal India Unit CMPDI Posts 54% Profit Surge, Announces Interim Dividend
Coal India subsidiary CMPDI reported a 54% surge in first-quarter net profit driven by robust margin expansion, prompting a 7% share price rally and an interim dividend.
CMPDI, a key subsidiary of state-controlled Coal India, saw its shares climb 7% after reporting a sharp acceleration in first-quarter earnings. Net profit for the three months ending Q1 FY27 surged 54% year-on-year to Rs 116.3 crore, a substantial increase from Rs 75.5 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year.
The robust bottom-line growth was primarily driven by significant operating leverage rather than just top-line expansion. While revenue from operations rose a solid 18% to Rs 481.4 crore, up from Rs 409.3 crore, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) jumped 61.87% to Rs 168 crore from Rs 103.85 crore. This divergence indicates that the company successfully tightened its cost base to convert revenue growth into higher profitability.
A 62% increase in other income, which reached Rs 22.7 crore compared to Rs 14.06 crore a year earlier, provided an additional lift to the final net profit figure. For investors tracking the operational health of the business, the core EBITDA expansion remains the primary takeaway, as it reflects genuine improvements in the company's execution capabilities.
Looking to capitalise on the strong cash generation, the company's board approved a first interim dividend for FY27 of Rs 1.05 per equity share on a face value of Rs 2. The payout underscores a commitment to consistent shareholder returns. Investors holding the stock on the record date of July 24, 2026, will be eligible for the distribution, with payments scheduled for completion on or before August 19, 2026.
In the secondary market, CMPDI shares have delivered substantial momentum, gaining around 45% over the past three months to reach a market capitalisation of approximately Rs 18,097 crore. Despite this extended rally, the stock's 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) currently stands at 49.0. This neutral reading indicates that the shares are neither overbought nor oversold, leaving technical room for further price discovery.
For institutional and retail investors alike, CMPDI’s quarterly performance highlights the underlying financial strength within Coal India’s broader corporate ecosystem. The combination of accelerating margins, double-digit revenue growth, and reliable dividend payouts continues to differentiate the stock, making it a focal point for capital seeking exposure to India's state-run mining sector.
