Samsung forms RX robotics unit, shares surge on $40.7B AI pivot

Samsung Electronics is consolidating its robotics operations into a new division directly overseen by its CEO, signaling a $40.7 billion strategic pivot into physical AI that sent its stock surging.

Samsung Electronics shares jumped 6.76% on Tuesday after the South Korean technology group announced the creation of a dedicated robotics division. The new unit, dubbed RX or Robotics eXperience, will be overseen directly by CEO TM Roh. The benchmark Kospi index rose roughly 4% over the same session, highlighting the outsized investor enthusiasm for this specific corporate maneuver.

The establishment of RX provides structural clarity to Samsung's recent aggressive spending on what the company terms physical AI. By consolidating its disparate robotics capabilities into a single entity, Samsung is signaling to investors that this technology is no longer a peripheral research project. Instead, it is positioning robotics as a core, commercial growth vector designed to diversify its revenue streams.

This organizational shift formalizes a strategy that began taking shape late last year. In late 2024, Samsung moved to become the largest shareholder in Rainbow Robotics, a domestic firm specializing in the field. Bringing these capabilities under one roof allows the conglomerate to streamline its development pipeline from early-stage engineering straight through to consumer and enterprise commercialization.

Backing this structural overhaul is a massive financial commitment. Earlier this month at a public briefing in Jinju, Roh detailed plans to invest around 60 trillion won ($40.7 billion) across the broader Yeongnam region. A significant portion of this capital, specifically 19 trillion won, is allocated to the Gumi site. There, Samsung will partner with its affiliate Samsung SDS to construct dedicated physical AI infrastructure and manufacturing facilities tailored for humanoid robots.

To support its long-term strategy, Samsung is also expanding its geographic footprint for robotics research. The RX division will establish research bases in the U.S., China, and Japan. This deliberate expansion into major global tech hubs indicates an intent to leverage international engineering talent and integrate into diverse supply chains.

For market participants, Tuesday's share price rally reflects a validation of Samsung's pivot. Investors have long sought clarity on how the tech giant plans to navigate a cyclical memory chip market and stagnant smartphone demand. While the capital intensity of humanoid robotics carries inherent execution risks, the direct CEO oversight and dedicated financial backing demonstrate a concrete commitment to capturing a share of the emerging physical AI market.
