SBI Funds Management set for 17% premium debut

SBI Funds Management is expected to list at a significant premium after its IPO attracted massive institutional demand, highlighting the market's appetite for India's most profitable asset manager despite the offering being a pure exit for shareholders.

SBI Funds Management is scheduled to list today following an initial public offering that was subscribed more than 41 times. Unofficial grey market indicators suggest the shares will open around Rs 671, a roughly 17% premium to the upper price band of Rs 574.

The oversubscription was overwhelmingly driven by institutional money. Qualified Institutional Buyers bid for 140 times their allocated portion, while non-institutional investors subscribed 22.5 times. Retail individual investors showed more modest interest at 3.6 times.

The entire offering was structured as an Offer for Sale of 17.10 crore shares. Parent State Bank of India and French asset manager Amundi sold down their stakes, meaning SBI Funds Management will not receive any capital from the listing. For investors, the appeal lies in the company's sheer scale and margins rather than a growth equity raise.

As India's largest asset manager by quarterly average assets under management, the firm oversees Rs 29.46 lakh crore. Revenue from operations climbed to Rs 4,389 crore in the financial year ending March 2026, while consolidated profit after tax reached Rs 3,067 crore. Profitability stands out, with EBITDA margins expanding to 79.1% and return on equity hitting 51.4%.

The firm's valuation premium is underpinned by a vast retail franchise serving 17.95 million individual investors through a network of over 132,000 distributors. Systematic investment plans remain a core growth driver, with 16.2 million live accounts generating monthly inflows of Rs 4,059 crore. Furthermore, 94.3% of all transactions were processed digitally in FY26, with the InvesTap platform reaching 5.8 million downloads.
