Archer Aviation jumps 19% on Anduril hybrid eVTOL launch

Archer Aviation shares surged nearly 19% after the company and defense contractor Anduril unveiled a hybrid-electric autonomous aircraft that expands Archer's reach into the military market.

Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR) shares surged as much as 19.8% on Monday morning, holding onto an 18.9% gain by early afternoon. The sharp upward move was triggered by the joint unveiling of a new autonomous vertical lift aircraft developed with defense technology company Anduril.

The partnership marks a strategic shift for Archer, broadening its focus beyond urban air mobility to encompass military applications. The two companies framed the hybrid-electric vertical takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL) aircraft as "a new class of autonomous aircraft with the speed, range, payload, and operating cost that defense and commercial missions demand."

For the defense sector, Anduril is showcasing a variant named Thunder. This is classified as a Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft, placing it in the largest and most capable tier of the Defense Department's Unmanned Aircraft Systems. Securing a foothold in this category signals serious military backing for Archer's underlying technology.

The aircraft was built from the ground up rather than adapting an existing commercial airframe. Its hybrid-electric powertrain is designed to achieve the extended range and endurance required for defense operations while maintaining the precision needed to optimize power across various flight conditions. Additionally, the platform utilizes dual-tilt rotors that allow it to transition into cruise mode, significantly reducing power and fuel consumption during flight.

Commercial viability for the dual-use platform will face an early test this week. Archer intends to announce its first commercial customers for the new aircraft in the coming days. These announcements will provide a concrete indicator of whether the private sector values the platform as much as the defense community.

Despite Monday's rally, the stock's longer-term trajectory reflects deep underlying uncertainty among shareholders. Since its market debut five years ago, Archer has lost 62% of its peak value as it struggled to meet initial delivery promises. The company remains a high-risk, high-reward investment with a strictly binary outcome. Its ultimate market valuation depends less on this new defense prototype and more on whether it can secure Federal Aviation Administration certification for its flagship Midnight electric air taxi. Furthermore, the company must still prove it can manufacture its aircraft at scale.
