Tropical Smoothie accelerates expansion after Blackstone buyout

Tropical Smoothie Cafe has surpassed 1,700 locations and is scaling its pipeline, showing early signs that Blackstone's $2 billion acquisition is translating into disciplined unit growth and rising brand metrics.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe opened its 1,700th location in April and expects to reach 1,800 by year-end, adding roughly 330 units since Blackstone acquired the chain in 2024 at a $2 billion valuation. The fast-casual brand currently operates across 44 states and holds more than 900 additional stores in its development pipeline. For the private equity owner, this pipeline represents a critical mechanism for scaling system-wide sales and extracting value from the investment.

Supporting this physical footprint is a sharp increase in customer acquisition metrics. Chief Executive Max Wetzel, who assumed the role in 2024 after Charles Watson stepped down, said the company consolidated its media spending last year. That move contributed to a 19 percent year-over-year increase in brand awareness. Simultaneously, the loyalty program has swollen to 12 million members, up 25 percent from a year ago. Franchisees underwrite this national push through a 5 percent marketing fee, which sits on top of a 6 percent royalty.

Translating a massive pipeline into actual opened doors requires operational friction to be kept to a minimum. The corporate team has spent the past year adding staff dedicated to unit-level support to handle the incoming surge of new locations. Franchisee Jim Breidenstein, who operates eight locations with three more in development, highlighted the smooth nature of the integration. "The biggest change for all of us [since the acquisition] is … more of a familiarization of the staffing to support us as they go through the changes. I will say it's been relatively seamless," he said.

The brand is currently deploying a new "Eat Some Good" campaign across digital, traditional, and social channels. Wetzel signaled that consumers will see heavier advertising rotation as the summer progresses. "We're still, I'd say, at the beginning of our brand awareness journey," Wetzel said. The company remains focused on what the CEO termed "strong, disciplined growth and investments" as it works to convert its deep pipeline into operating cash flow.
