Hyperliquid to allow permissionless prediction market deployment

Hyperliquid to allow permissionless prediction market deployment

Hyperliquid is opening its decentralized exchange to permissionless prediction markets, challenging centralized incumbents with a staking model designed to ensure market quality.

Hyperliquid will allow users to create their own prediction markets on its decentralized exchange, shifting the power to deploy these contracts away from a centralized group of validators.

The move, announced on Sunday as a future enhancement to the May HIP-4 upgrade, introduces a permissionless framework. HIP-4 originally brought "outcome trading" to the platform. While validators will still vote on approved market templates, the actual deployment will be open to anyone willing to meet strict capital requirements.

Deployers must stake 500,000 HYPE tokens to launch a market. This capital acts as collateral that can be slashed if validators determine a market is poorly defined or settled incorrectly. In exchange for assuming this risk, deployers keep up to 50% of the generated trading fees.

This economic model creates a high barrier to entry based on the token's current price, but ensures creators have significant skin in the game. It contrasts with the centralized models used by traditional financial firms now entering the space.

Prediction markets have evolved into a multibillion-dollar blockchain sector currently dominated by Polymarket and Kalshi. Participants bet on outcomes ranging from central bank interest rate decisions to major entertainment events. The recent FIFA World Cup, for example, drew more than $50 billion in bets across various platforms.

The sector's rapid expansion has caught the attention of mainstream finance. Both Coinbase and Robinhood are moving to offer prediction markets alongside conventional trading, aiming to provide a one-stop shop for retail traders.

Hyperliquid's decentralized approach aims to capture a share of this volume without relying on a central authority. Once the permissionless system goes live on mainnet following a testnet phase, the existing validator-controlled markets will become rare. Hyperliquid said "ideally," there will be fewer than 10 of them per year.

The native HYPE token edged up 1% on the news, trading recently at $60.79 after bouncing from an intraday low of $59.88.
