VA Tech Wabag shares climb on Bengaluru water contract

VA Tech Wabag secured a large municipal wastewater treatment contract in Bengaluru, pushing its stock up 4% and reinforcing its order pipeline in India's water infrastructure sector.

VA Tech Wabag shares rose 4% after the company secured a "Large" municipal wastewater treatment contract from the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). Under the firm's internal classification system, a large domestic order is defined as carrying a value between Rs 250 crore and Rs 600 crore.

The contract covers the design, construction, and operation of two critical facilities in Bengaluru. Wabag will build a 100 million litres per day (MLD) sewage treatment plant and a 25 MLD tertiary treatment plant at Byramangala. A separate 60 MLD sewage treatment plant will be constructed at Bellandur.

For investors, the specific structure of the contract holds particular appeal. The engineering, procurement, and construction phase is scheduled for completion within 36 months. Crucially, this will be followed by a seven-year operations and maintenance (O&M) period. This extended O&M timeline shifts the revenue profile beyond a standard one-time construction payout, providing Wabag with a predictable, recurring income stream over the better part of a decade.

The order further cements Wabag's positioning within India's municipal water infrastructure segment. The new projects are designed to significantly enhance Bengaluru's overall sewage treatment capacity while directly supporting Karnataka’s long-term water security goals. As urban centres prioritise environmentally responsible wastewater management, this pipeline of municipal work reduces Wabag's reliance on purely private industrial contracts.

The market has already reacted positively to the company's recent momentum. Wabag shares have gained roughly 45% over the past three months and have surged nearly 291% over the last three years. The company currently commands a market capitalisation of approximately Rs 12,406 crore. Over the past year, the stock has traded in a wide range, hitting a 52-week low of Rs 1,033 and a 52-week high of Rs 2,253.

From a technical perspective, the stock's recent rally does not yet appear overextended. The 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) currently sits at 50.9, firmly in neutral territory and well below the 70 threshold that typically signals overbought conditions. Furthermore, the shares are trading above five of their eight key simple moving averages, indicating that the broader price trend remains intact.
