According to her, the process was coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Education, while state ministries of education facilitated nominations of teachers and schools for the awards. The minister said the initiative was part of broader efforts to transform the teaching profession through innovation, mobility, artificial intelligence, inclusion and professional excellence. The 2026 World Teachers Day celebration is themed, “Transforming the Teaching Profession for Africa’s Future.” Ahmad said the theme focuses on five interconnected pillars, including innovation through creative teaching methods and digital tools; mobility through teacher exchange and cross-border collaboration; and the responsible use of artificial intelligence for personalised learning, data-driven decision-making and reducing administrative burdens. Other pillars are inclusion, which seeks equitable access to quality education regardless of gender, ability, socioeconomic status or location, and professional excellence through continuous development, fair remuneration, supportive policies and greater recognition of teachers. She said activities lined up for the celebration were designed to raise awareness, promote critical thinking and motivate teachers who are contributing to the development of education across the country. A symposium on the theme is scheduled to be held as part of the activities, with heads of education parastatals expected to discuss the key pillars of the 2026 celebration.
